What Can I Be If I Study International Relations?

Most students studying international relations pursue political careers, but that is not the only available option. Statistically speaking, it is evident that most graduates are thriving as diplomats and attachés in foreign countries all over the world. Some other graduates have landed jobs as lobbyists seeking the best interest of their organization by influencing law-making within their country. Some others choose to pursue careers in gathering intelligence which is a job that does not particularly require close contact with other people and is more about observing them. Free International Relations Schools

1. Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences

Rhine-Waal University, known locally as Hochschule Rhein-Waal (HSRW), is an institution for international relations program in Germany recently founded in 2009 that offers free education. Since its establishment, it has grown exponentially and became one of the most well-known schools in the country. It operates on two campuses located in Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort, where it provides modern facilities and inspiring spaces for learning. HSRW takes pride in offering degrees with a strong focus on practical application and real-world relevance.

HSRW does not charge tuition fees to all students. However, all students are obliged to pay the semester fee of EUR 315. This covers your mandatory social services contribution, student representative body contribution, transportation pass, and support for university sports and music.

The International Relations program at HSRW is available at Bachelor’s level only. It takes 3.5 years to complete, with one semester dedicated to a mandatory work placement. Small class sizes are maintained to ensure that you receive individualized support as you go through coursework. Classes are conducted completely in English.

2. Malmö University

Malmö University is one of the largest international relations schools in Sweden in terms of the student population. It welcomes more than 24,000 students each year who are working on their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Malmö is known for having the best International Relations and Political Science programs in the country and offers free tuition. The presence of students, professors, and researchers has dramatically transformed the industrial city of Malmö into a lively center for education.

Malmö offers a 3-year Bachelor in International Relations. The program is taught in English and focuses on understanding how society works, especially emerging conflicts on local and global levels. Malmö aims to educate students who aspire to work in international aid, conflict prevention, and human rights.

Students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland enjoy tuition-free education at Malmö. However, you must present citizenship documentation when you submit your application. Other international students must pay a full tuition fee of SEK 235,000 for the International Relations program.

3. Maria Curie-Sklodowska University

The Marie Curie-Sklodowska University, also known as the Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej (UMCS), was founded in 1944 by a group of scientists in Poland. It initially specialized in medical science education but eventually offered more programs in natural sciences, law, and economics. Throughout the years, the university campus also developed, and is now known to offer free tuition. Contemporary buildings were erected to house libraries, classrooms, gyms, and the renowned Chatka Żaka Entertainment Centre.

International Relations is available at UMCS at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Undergraduates must choose between three available specializations, namely Global Economy & Business, Regional Studies – Central to East Europe, or Regional Studies – Asia and Pacific. Graduate students must also choose between three available specializations. Options include International Relations in Central & Eastern Europe, Economic Diplomacy, and International Place Branding.

Tuition fee is free at UMCS for Polish citizens. Students who don’t qualify for the tuition-free offer must pay EUR 2,000 each year, plus EUR 200 to cover administrative fees. Non-Polish citizens of Polish origin can apply for a discount of up to 30%.

4. Middle East Technical University

The Middle East Technical University (METU) was established in 1956 to educate students in Turkey who were interested in natural and social sciences. The school is one of the first to offer high-quality and free education in the country. It introduced new methods and designed curricula influenced by the latest research and built modern facilities to aid in the learning of students. Today, METU is the top choice of students in Turkey. It receives over one million applications each year, and most departments only accept the top 0.1%.

METU offers International Relations programs at the Master’s and Doctorate levels. The Master’s level aims to enhance your knowledge in the field and explore relevant issues while the Doctorate level studies theories and methodology with an emphasis on the Middle East and Europe – two areas which Turkey has strong relations with.

Citizens of Turkey enjoy free tuition at MEST. International students must pay the tuition fee of TL 3,000 for undergraduate programs and TL 2,500 for graduate programs.

5. Aalborg University

Aalborg University (AAU) in Denmark consistently ranks as one of the best schools for international relations and engineering in Europe It is known for its unique study method called the Aalborg Model for Problem Based Learning, which puts students together each semester to work on an important written assignment. This method aims to develop the vital skills of communication and cooperation to prepare students to become good team workers and leaders in their chosen careers.

There are no undergraduate programs for International Relations at AAU. It is only available at the Master’s level with a 2-year study duration. You will be exploring major international issues while strengthening your academic prowess in the field. The curriculum also has a strong focus on sustainability and regional governance. The medium of instruction for this program is English.

Students from EU and EEA countries study at AAU with no tuition and application fees. Those who have Danish residence permits enjoy no tuition fees, as well.
