Mexico is culturally and linguistically diverse. Chichén Itzá, which is home to El Castillo (the Temple of Kukulcán), is one of the New7Wonders of the World. Mexico also has a much larger native Spanish-speaking population than Spain.

Spanish is widely spoken in Mexico, but the country is linguistically diverse. Mexico recognizes 69 national languages: Spanish and 68 Indigenous languages.

Another interesting fact is that the Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as Tlachihualtepetl, is located in Puebla, Mexico. It is the world’s largest pyramid by volume.

Affordable Schools in Mexico for International Students

1. National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)

  • Admissions
  • Undergraduate Tuition Fee: UNAM does not charge tuition. Students pay a symbolic annual regulatory fee of MXN $0.20 and may make an optional voluntary contribution.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) traces its history to the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico, founded in 1551. Based in Mexico City, UNAM also operates an extension school in Chicago, Illinois.

UNAM describes itself as Mexico’s largest university. Its mission includes educating professionals, conducting research, and extending the benefits of culture. It is also the least expensive institution on this list because it does not charge regular undergraduate tuition. Students should still budget for admission-related expenses, living costs, books, and any program-specific materials.

2. Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM)

Tecnológico de Monterrey, formally the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), was founded in Monterrey in 1943. It operates campuses across Mexico.

The Monterrey campus lists academic buildings, research laboratories, a student center, sports facilities, and residence halls.

Tecnológico de Monterrey is accredited by the Federation of Private Mexican Institutions of Higher Education (FIMPES) and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Tuition can vary depending on the campus, program, academic level, and course load. International students should review the official tuition calculator and admissions page before applying.

3. Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL)

Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) describes itself as Mexico’s third-largest academic institution. Its official overview currently lists six campuses: Ciudad Universitaria, Ciencias de la Salud, Mederos, Ciencias Agropecuarias, Sabinas Hidalgo, and Linares.

Founded in 1933, UANL offers high school, undergraduate, and graduate programs. Its website also provides information about its research centers and institutes.

UANL publishes central academic and school-services charges rather than one universal tuition amount for every program. For a new international undergraduate student whose previous school is outside the UANL system, the published central charges total MXN $16,301. Students should also consult their chosen faculty because internal fees, preparatory courses, and other program-specific charges may be added separately.

4. Universidad Iberoamericana (IBERO)

  • Undergraduate Tuition | Graduate Programs
  • Undergraduate Tuition Fee: Tuition varies by program and course load. The ideal-semester plan costs MXN $194,500 for Actuarial Science and MXN $206,320 for Business Administration. The semester total is divided into five monthly payments.

Founded in 1943, Universidad Iberoamericana (IBERO) offers undergraduate and graduate programs and is rooted in the Jesuit educational tradition.

IBERO does not charge separate enrollment or re-enrollment fees for undergraduate students. Instead, its five monthly tuition payments cover the semester and most university services, excluding parking and school transportation. Costs vary according to the degree program and the number of classes taken, so prospective students should use IBERO’s current tuition page to calculate the amount for their intended course load.

5. Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP)

  • Bachelor’s and Graduate Tuition Fees | New Student Payments
  • Undergraduate Tuition Fee: MXN $4,120 per academic unit for Fall 2026. A semester with the minimum 30 units costs MXN $123,600, while the average 36-unit course load costs MXN $148,320.
  • Graduate Tuition Fees: MXN $5,100 per unit for on-campus or hybrid master’s programs and MXN $5,510 per unit for doctoral programs for Fall 2026.

Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) organizes its academic offerings across five schools: Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Engineering, and Business and Economics.

UDLAP calculates tuition according to the number of academic units taken. An undergraduate course is normally worth six units, and students take an average of six courses, or 36 units, per semester. New students should also budget for the one-time MXN $16,000 admission fee and other applicable charges, such as the medical examination and health insurance fee.

Tuition fees and additional charges may change between academic terms. International students should compare current tuition, admissions requirements, and scholarship eligibility on each university’s official website before applying.
