English-speaking countries are popular among international students pursuing their higher education, particularly among students who want to study in English and expand their career opportunities. New Zealand is one such destination. The country offers a nationally quality-assured tertiary education system, a diverse culture, and programs at several of its top universities. As demand for online education has grown, a number of New Zealand institutions have expanded their online and distance-learning options. However, availability varies considerably by institution, program, subject, location, and student status.
International students can access selected online bachelor’s programs from New Zealand institutions. Some can be completed entirely from outside New Zealand, while others only allow students to begin online before transferring to on-campus study. Tuition fees also vary substantially, so applicants should confirm the current delivery arrangements, international eligibility, and total cost directly with the institution.
Top Schools Offering Online Bachelor’s Degrees in New Zealand
1. University of Waikato
The University of Waikato opened in Hamilton in 1964. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications across business, arts, computing, education, engineering, law, science, and other fields.
Waikato provides academic, counseling, international-student, and career support services. However, its international offshore study page describes an online-start pathway rather than a general selection of fully online bachelor’s degrees. The university states that students may begin selected programs online and later transfer to face-to-face study in New Zealand.
2. New Zealand Tertiary College
New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) has specialized in early childhood education for more than 40 years. Its qualifications are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, and NZTC is accredited to deliver selected qualifications to students studying from overseas.
NZTC’s Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education is a Level 7 qualification consisting of 360 credits. It is listed as a three-year, full-time program available through online and blended study. The degree does not require a practical field-placement component and does not lead directly to New Zealand teacher registration. Students seeking a teacher-registration qualification should distinguish it from NZTC’s Bachelor of Teaching in Early Childhood Education, which includes practical requirements.
The online Bachelor of Education is designed for students interested in early childhood-related roles and can be studied from outside New Zealand. It includes online course materials and opportunities to communicate with lecturers and other students through NZTC’s learning platform.
NZTC lists the international tuition fee for the Bachelor of Education as approximately NZD 28,000 per year. The college also lists additional charges, including student fee insurance, an identification card fee, a police-vetting fee, and an NZQA reporting fee. Final fees are confirmed after admission.
3. Massey University
Massey University has offered distance education for more than 60 years. It currently advertises flexible online study across more than 1,400 courses. In its latest published QS Stars assessment, Massey received a Five Stars Plus institutional rating and five stars in each assessed category, including online learning.
Massey allows international students to complete selected qualifications online from outside New Zealand. Its international prospectus states that fully online students do not need to travel to New Zealand and receive the same qualification as students studying on campus. Students must nevertheless choose their courses carefully because certain courses may include onshore contact requirements.
Online bachelor’s options listed for international students in 2026 include the Bachelor of Accountancy; selected majors in the Bachelor of Arts, Business, Communication, Construction, Earth and Environmental Science, Information Sciences, and Science; the Bachelor of Aviation Management; and the Bachelor of Resource and Environmental Planning.
Massey’s estimated tuition for international students studying online from outside New Zealand generally ranges from approximately NZD 29,760 to NZD 40,510 per 120 credits among the listed bachelor’s qualifications and majors. These offshore estimates exclude New Zealand Goods and Services Tax.
Massey offers scholarships and financial-aid information for international students. Eligibility varies, and some awards are limited to students studying full-time on a New Zealand campus, so online applicants should check each scholarship’s conditions.
5. University of Otago
The University of Otago has offered distance learning for more than 35 years. It is one of New Zealand’s best-known universities and conducts research across health, science, society, culture, and sustainability.
Otago offers a mixture of complete distance qualifications and individual distance papers. Its distance-learning guidance emphasizes that not every distance paper is fully online. Some papers may include residential schools, workshops, examinations, or other activities requiring physical attendance.
Current undergraduate distance options include the Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and the Bachelor of Theology. The university also lists selected distance papers in subjects such as English and Linguistics. The Bachelor of Social Work is not wholly available by distance; only its 300- and 400-level papers are listed for distance study. Surveying is not listed as a complete online bachelor’s program.
Students considering an online New Zealand qualification should compare the program’s accreditation, delivery method, time-zone requirements, assessments, tuition and additional fees, recognition in their home country, and access to student support. Fully online study also does not provide the same immigration or post-study work opportunities as completing eligible study in New Zealand.
