3. University of Washington

This online master’s program is interdisciplinary and includes core courses such as “Introduction to Dynamical Systems & Chaos” and “Vector Calculus & Complex Variables.”

The University of Washington offers the MS in Applied and Computational Mathematics in both in-person and online formats. Students may complete the program full-time in one year or part-time in three years. The online format is designed for working professionals and students outside the Seattle area, with classes, readings, assignments, and discussions accessed online.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or another branch of science or engineering. They should also have coursework in calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and numerical analysis or scientific computing. The online MS program admits for autumn entry, so applicants should check the department’s admissions page for the current deadline.

The program requires a minimum of 36 credits, although students complete an average of 42 credits. Based on the posted 2025–2026 rate of $1,134 per credit, minimum tuition for 36 credits is $40,824, excluding required fees, textbooks, software, and any future annual fee increases.

4. Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Columbia University was founded as King’s College in 1754. Its MS in Applied Mathematics is offered fully online through the Columbia Video Network, a distance education system established by Columbia Engineering in 1986.

The program requires 30 graduate points through Columbia Video Network. Students complete core courses and selected electives, including options in applied mathematics, computer science, industrial engineering and operations research, mechanical engineering, materials science, and electrical engineering. Applied Mathematics master’s students must also complete the zero-credit APMA E6100 Research Seminar before graduation.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in engineering, science, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Columbia lists a minimum GPA of 3.0, optional GRE general test scores, three recommendation letters, transcripts, a resume, and a personal professional statement among the requirements.
