The Journey

Hi, I'm Thalia from Timor-Leste, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Development Studies at the University of Melbourne through the Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS).

My journey into development was not something I had planned. After completing a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering in Indonesia, I thought my career would remain in the environmental sector. That changed when I had the opportunity to lead a diversity and inclusion project. Working alongside communities made me realise that while technical knowledge is important, many of the challenges people face are rooted in much more than engineering alone.

That experience left me with more questions than answers. It challenged the way I thought about development and made me realise there was so much more I wanted to understand. The more I worked, the more I realised I wanted to understand the bigger picture.

That curiosity eventually led me to pursue a Master's in Development Studies. Rather than moving away from my engineering background, I saw it as an opportunity to build on it, bringing together technical knowledge and a deeper understanding of the social, political, and economic dimensions of development to contribute to meaningful change in Timor-Leste.

Australia Awards Scholarship Details

I received the AAS, funded by the Australian government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), to pursue a Master of Development Studies at the University of Melbourne. The programme is a 1.5-year coursework master's and is fully funded, covering tuition fees, return air travel, an establishment allowance, living expenses, health insurance, and academic support throughout my studies.

Receiving this scholarship has been a privilege, and I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity. Beyond supporting my studies, it has allowed me to learn alongside scholars from diverse countries and backgrounds, broadening my perspectives both academically and personally. It has also deepened my sense of responsibility to return to Timor-Leste and apply what I have learned in ways that respond to the country’s development challenges and priorities.

Educational Background

I completed a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering at President University, an international English-speaking university in Indonesia, under a partial scholarship. To maintain the scholarship, I was required to keep my GPA above 3.0 every semester, which taught me discipline, consistency, and responsibility from the very beginning of my academic journey.

To be honest, engineering did not come naturally to me. There were many long nights of studying, moments of self-doubt, and times when I questioned whether I was capable enough. What kept me going was being surrounded by lecturers and classmates who constantly inspired me to keep learning and push myself a little further. Looking back, I am grateful for those challenges because they shaped my resilience and reminded me that growth often comes through perseverance.

Beyond the technical knowledge, my degree strengthened my analytical thinking, problem-solving, and evidence-based decision-making skills. Together with my professional experience, it provided a strong foundationfor pursuing a Master's in Development Studies, where I could connect technical knowledge with the broader social, political, and economic dimensions of development.

How Did You Find Information About Australia Awards Scholarship and University of Melbourne?

The Australia Awards Scholarship is well-known in Timor-Leste, so information about the scholarship is widely shared through its official website and social media platforms. Before each application round opens, the Australia Awards team also conducts information sessions and application workshops across the country, including in the municipalities. That was how I first learnt about the scholarship, the application process, and the eligibility requirements.

I also spoke with a few Australia Awards alumni to learn more about their experiences and gain a better understanding of what to expect throughout the application process. Hearing their journeys gave me a clearer picture of the scholarship and encouraged me to apply.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes. I took the IELTS exam as part of both the AAS and the University of Melbourne admission requirements. For my master's programme, I needed an overall score of at least 6.5, with no other bands lower than 6.0. Australia Awards also provided IELTS preparation support for shortlisted candidates, which helped me better understand the test format and prepare more effectively.

My preparation was straightforward but consistent. I used official IELTS practice materials and spent more time improving the areas where I felt least confident. I also did full practice tests at home under timed conditions to become more familiar with the format of the exam. Preparing consistently over time worked much better for me than leaving everything until the last minute.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship?

Preparing for the AAS took time, patience, and a lot of self-reflection. I wasn't successful the first time I applied, but instead of seeing it as a failure, I chose to see it as an opportunity to learn. That experience helped me better understand the application process and identify areas where I could improve.

When I decided to apply again the following year, I kept it to myself. I didn't tell my family or friends because I wanted to focus on improving my application without putting pressure on myself. I spent time reflecting on my career journey, my future goals, and why pursuing a Master's in Development Studies was important to me and to the contribution I hope to make in Timor-Leste.

I also reached out to a few Australia Awards alumni whose advice I truly valued. They generously took the time to review my application and conducted mock interviews with me, providing honest and constructive feedback throughout the process. I will always be grateful for their time, kindness, and encouragement. Their support helped me grow in confidence.

How is Your Experience at the University of Melbourne?

I found my experience at the University of Melbourne intellectually stimulating and personally transformative. Rather than simply delivering content, many lecturers challenged us to question assumptions, engage with complex ideas, and connect theory to real-world development challenges. Learning alongside classmates from diverse professional, cultural, and academic backgrounds broadened my perspective and helped me appreciate how development challenges are approached differently across contexts.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

It is difficult to know exactly what made my application stand out because there were many highly qualified applicants. If I had to guess, I believe it was the combination of my academic background, professional experience, and clear sense of purpose. During my interview, I did not try to give the 'perfect' answer; I simply spoke honestly about my experiences, what I had learnt, and why I wanted to pursue further study. I also demonstrated a clear connection between my past experiences, my postgraduate studies, and my long-term commitment to contributing to Timor-Leste's development.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would start working on my personal statement much earlier. Looking back, having more time would have allowed me to reflect more deeply on my experiences and refine my application without feeling rushed.

I would also have reached out to Australia Awards alumni earlier in the process. Their feedback and mock interview sessions were incredibly helpful, and giving them more time would have allowed me to incorporate their suggestions more thoughtfully.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

If I could share a few pieces of advice, the first would be to start earlier than you think you need to. Don't just focus on writing your personal statement; start gathering all the required documents as well. Before submitting your application, double-check that you're using the correct forms and templates for the application year. It may seem like a small detail, but Australia Awards places great importance on following the application requirements carefully.

Starting early also gives you enough time to reflect on your experiences, revise your personal statement, and seek feedback. Don't be afraid to reach out to Australia Awards alumni or previous scholars. Many are genuinely willing to share their experiences because they were once in your position too. Just remember to be respectful of their time by reaching out well before the application deadline, as many are balancing work, family, and other commitments.

Most importantly, trust your own journey. It can be easy to compare yourself with other applicants or wonder whether your experiences are "good enough." I certainly had those thoughts myself. Looking back, I realisedthat what mattered most was being honest about my journey, why I wanted to pursue further study, and how I hoped to use that opportunity to contribute to Timor-Leste. Every applicant has a different story, and sometimes it's the most genuine ones that leave the greatest impression.
