The Journey

My name is Moruff Adetunji Oyeniyi, and I am from Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government in Osun State, Nigeria. I am currently pursuing a doctoral degree in geoinformatics at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Germany. Previously, I earned a Master's degree in the Transformation of Urban Landscapes at RUB, where I was fortunate to receive 500 euros per month for four consecutive semesters through the DAAD scholarship programme for international students, in collaboration with the RUB International Office. My academic interests have always centred on solving real-world problems through research, innovation, and interdisciplinary thinking.

I decided to pursue further education to deepen my expertise, gain international exposure, and contribute meaningfully to solving environmental challenges. Germany stood out for its strong research culture, world-class universities, and opportunities for students to engage in cutting-edge research while studying in an international environment.

Educational Background

I completed my undergraduate degree at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, where I developed a strong foundation in geography. My academic journey was characterised not only by classroom performance but also by curiosity, research interests, leadership experiences, and a desire to make an impact.

  • Undergraduate Degree: [Geography]
  • Institution: [Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria]
  • GPA: [Second Class Division]

My educational background prepared me for graduate studies by equipping me with analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, research experience, and the discipline required for advanced academic work.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Ruhr University Bochum?

I began by identifying programmes that closely aligned with my academic interests and long-term career goals. Rather than applying broadly, I focused on finding institutions where my research interests aligned with the strengths of the faculty and the programme.

How Did You Find Information About the DAAD Scholarship and Ruhr University Bochum?

I relied primarily on:

  • University websites
  • Academic and scholarly communities
  • Recommendations from mentors and previous scholarship recipients

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?

My scholarship preparation started long before I submitted the application.

I focused on:

  • Building a strong academic profile
  • Developing research experience
  • Participating in leadership and community activities
  • Crafting a compelling motivation letter
  • Securing strong recommendation letters

For the motivation letter, I clearly explained:

  • My academic journey
  • Why I chose Germany
  • Why the program was a good fit
  • My future goals
  • My financial situation
  • How would the scholarship help me contribute to society

I spent considerable time revising my application documents and seeking feedback from trusted mentors before submitting.

How is Your Experience at Ruhr University Bochum?

My experience at Ruhr University Bochum has been deeply rewarding. The university fosters an environment that encourages independent thinking, research excellence, and collaboration. One of the most valuable aspects of studying at RUB was learning to approach complex problems systematically and to conduct research to an international standard. This was further validated when my Master's thesis received the Best Master's Thesis Award and Prize at the university's annual celebration in November 2024.

How Do You Rate Ruhr University Bochum Academically?

Research excellence, Critical thinking, Independent learning, and practical application of knowledge

Students are encouraged to question assumptions, ask questions, and contribute original ideas.

How Does Ruhr University Bochum Support International Students?

The university provides support through:

  • International student offices
  • Orientation programs
  • Language courses
  • Academic advising
  • Career support services
  • Student organisations and networking opportunities

These resources make the transition easier for international students.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or German?

My program was conducted primarily in English.

However, learning German is highly beneficial for daily life, networking, internships, and long-term career opportunities in Germany.

What Did You Pursue After the DAAD Scholarship?

Following my studies, I continued to build my professional and research career by applying the knowledge and skills gained during my Master's programme to real-world challenges. The scholarship helped me focus more on my studies and to produce an excellent Master's thesis, which was published in a high-impact review journal and was also rated and awarded as the outstanding Master's thesis. The scholarship and graduate education opened doors to opportunities such as the PhD programme that I am currently undertaking.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing German?

For English-taught programmes, students can succeed academically without speaking German fluently.

However, basic German significantly improves:

  • Everyday life
  • Administrative processes
  • Social integration
  • Professional opportunities
  • Networking

I strongly recommend learning at least basic German before or shortly after arrival.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe several factors strengthened my application:

  1. A clear and coherent academic story.
  2. Strong alignment between my background, goals, and the chosen program.
  3. Genuine motivation rather than generic statements.
  4. Research interests that connected well with the program.
  5. Evidence of leadership, initiative, and impact beyond academics.

Most importantly, I communicated not only what I had achieved but also what I hoped to contribute.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would:

  • Start preparing earlier.
  • Seek feedback on my application documents sooner.
  • Build stronger connections with current students and alumni before applying.
  • Invest more time in learning German before arrival.

I would also spend less time worrying about being "perfect" and more time focusing on submitting the strongest possible application.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early. Read every requirement carefully. Develop a clear academic and career vision. Write authentic application essays. Seek feedback from mentors. Don't underestimate recommendation letters. Apply even if you think your profile is not perfect.

One of the biggest myths about scholarships is that only exceptional students with perfect grades receive them. While academic performance matters, scholarship committees also look for purpose, potential, leadership, impact, and a clear vision for the future. Most importantly, believe that opportunities like these are attainable. Many successful scholars started exactly where you are today, uncertain, hopeful, and working out the next step. If you prepare intentionally and stay consistent, your chances of success increase significantly.
