How Mina, a Canadian Scholar, Secured a Partially Funded Master’s in Global Health at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark Through the Danish Government Scholarship

My name is Mina, and I am from Vancouver, Canada. I completed my Master’s in Global Health in June 2026 at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. During my Bachelor’s, I did a semester abroad in Copenhagen, where I fell in love with the city. With a minor in arts in Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice, global health was the perfect intersection, so I decided to pursue my master’s degree. I had taken a course focused on health and felt extremely connected to the equity aspect of population health. With an interest in working with people, I also sought a programme where theory and practice could be brought together by international collaboration and ideas.

Danish Government Scholarship Details

In my second year of studies, I was offered the Danish Government Scholarship, which covers all tuition costs for non-EU/EEA students in the second year of studies (130.000 DKK). A monthly stipend is also provided for 10 months (10 x 10.711 DKK). The total amount was 237.110 DKK, or approximately $50,800 CAD.

Educational Background

Prior to the master’s, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of British Columbia. My GPA was 3.40. The degree in Biology automatically fulfilled the degree requirement for admission; therefore, I was not required to submit additional documentation for the programme.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Copenhagen?

I researched various programmes and assessed my degree requirements against them. I was also very grateful to seek and receive feedback from friends and mentors. I was not required to take any standardised tests as my Bachelor’s degree in Canada met the requirement for the English language.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Danish Government Scholarship?

I did not apply for this scholarship as it is automatically awarded to non-EU/EEA students with outstanding academic records.

How is Your Experience at the University of Copenhagen?

I truly appreciated this programme, particularly the focus on group work and opportunities for hands-on experience, including the country exposure course, where we worked with local organisations and universities in the country of choice on a global health-related topic.

How Do You Rate the University of Copenhagen Academically?

The University of Copenhagen and its faculty are highly connected with other global institutions, so I was very thankful to learn from various professors globally, be they in-person or through online lessons.

How Does the University of Copenhagen Support International Students?

At present, the institution does not provide many scholarship or support opportunities for students, which will hopefully improve in the future.

I am currently working as a research assistant, with a focus on public health interventions related to diabetes and non-communicable diseases.
