The Journey

My name is Miguel Felipe Arévalo Castiblanco, and I'm originally from Colombia. I'm currently a PhD candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. My background is in automation engineering, and over the years my research has moved into multi-agent systems, distributed control, and optimization- the kind of problems where you have several agents (robots, vehicles, sensors) that need to coordinate and make decisions together, often without a central authority telling them what to do. I decided to pursue a PhD because I wanted to go deeper into that research, work alongside people doing cutting-edge work in the field, and eventually contribute something meaningful to it myself.

Fulbright Scholarship Details

I received the Fulbright scholarship, administered through IIE, which covered my research costs for one year. Around the same time, I was also selected as a recipient of the IEEE Control Systems Society (IEEE-CSS) Graduate Fellowship.

Educational Background

Before the PhD, I completed a B.S. in Automation Engineering at Universidad de La Salle, and later an M.Sc. in Industrial Automation at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Those years gave me the technical foundation (control theory, optimization, programming) but, just as importantly, they got me involved early in research projects and academic communities, which is really what pushed me toward applying for a PhD abroad.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Houston and Universidad Nacional de Colombia?

Mostly through conferences and through talking to other Fulbright scholars. Being around people who had already gone through the process, hearing what worked for them, what didn't, was more useful to me than any guide I could have read on my own.

How Did You Find Information About Fulbright Scholarship and University of Houston and Universidad Nacional de Colombia?

Through professors I met at conferences. A lot of the useful information doesn't come from a website — it comes from people who've done it before and are willing to talk about it.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes, I took the TOEFL and the GRE. I didn't do an intensive prep program; I just did a couple of practice tests online to get familiar with the format and timing.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?

I reached out to Fulbrighters from previous cohorts and asked them directly about their experience with the application, what the essays should focus on, what the interviews were like, that kind of thing.

How is Your Experience at the University of Houston and Universidad Nacional de Colombia?

It was a great experience. I found an incredible community, and being side by side with high-level researchers changed the way I think about my own work, and honestly, changed my life.

How Do You Rate the University of Houston and Universidad Nacional de Colombia Academically?

Very highly, it's a top-tier institution, and that shows in the quality of the people you get to work with every day.

How Does the University of Houston and Universidad Nacional de Colombia Support International Students?

The Office of International Student and Scholar Services was wonderful. Beyond that, the Fulbrighter community and the Latino community there were a huge support system throughout my time.

What Did You Pursue After the Fulbright Scholarship?

I continued in research; I'm now a PhD candidate at the University of Houston, working as a Research Assistant on multi-agent robotic systems and autonomous decision-making.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing the Native Language of the Country (Only Answer if the Country That You Are Studying Is Not an English-Speaking Country). (optional)*

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I think it was being genuine. I didn't try to come across as the smartest person in the room, and I didn't frame it around needing the money or needing the scholarship. I just talked honestly about what I wanted to do and why.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

At that point in time, I would have also applied to the Minciencias scholarship, just to have another option on the table.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Don't let the fear of rejection stop you from applying. You have nothing to lose by trying
