How I Secured a Fully Funded Master's at Duke University, United States Through the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship

My name is Mariam Tsindeliani, and I am from Georgia. Since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by both physics and biology. I was curious about how the world works, but I never imagined that one day I would find a profession that could combine these two interests.

During my university studies, one of my professors introduced me to the field of Medical Physics, and I immediately felt that this was the path I was looking for. Medical physics allows me to combine my passion for physics with my desire to contribute to human health and patient care.

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Physics and my Master’s degree in Biophysics at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, both with a 4.0 GPA. Currently, I work as a Medical Physicist at Todua Clinic in Georgia, where I work with nuclear medicine technologies such as PET/CT and SPECT/CT, focusing on quality control, imaging optimization, and radiation safety.

To become a qualified medical physicist, it is necessary to complete a specialized Master’s program in Medical Physics. Unfortunately, Georgia currently does not have an accredited Medical Physics graduate program, so studying abroad became necessary for me. My goal is to gain advanced knowledge and clinical experience and eventually return to Georgia to help develop this field and contribute to improving healthcare in my country.

Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship Details

I received the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship to pursue my Master’s degree in Medical Physics at Duke University in North Carolina, USA.

The Fulbright Program is one of the most prestigious international scholarship programs in the world. It has been operating for almost 80 years and has supported more than 400,000 scholars across more than 160 countries. It is highly competitive because it provides complete support for students studying abroad.

The scholarship covers all major expenses related to my education and living in the United States. This includes university tuition, flight tickets, health insurance, application fees, and a monthly living stipend of $3,075. In my case, Fulbright covers approximately $123,000 per year of study for two years.

Additionally, I received a 40% tuition scholarship from Duke University.

What makes Fulbright especially unique is that it supports scholars not only financially but also personally and academically. Before starting my studies, I participated in a Fulbright Pre-Academic Program in Florida with Fulbright scholars from around the world. During this program, we received training on academic writing, presentations, cultural adaptation, the U.S. academic system, opening bank accounts, finding housing, purchasing phone services, avoiding scams, and many other practical aspects of living in the United States.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

I was offered admission from more than ten universities across Europe and the United States.

However, after receiving the Fulbright Scholarship and the opportunity to study at Duke University, I decided to choose Duke. Besides its excellent academic reputation, one of the main reasons I selected Duke was the friendly and supportive environment. Even during my interview, the faculty members were very welcoming, and I felt that Duke was a place where students are truly valued and supported.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Physics at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University with a 4.0 GPA. During my undergraduate studies, I developed a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, computational methods, and analytical problem-solving.

After that, I continued with a Master’s degree in Biophysics, where I also graduated with a 4.0 GPA. My research focused on understanding biological systems using physical and computational approaches. I worked with techniques such as spectrophotometry, calorimetry, and MATLAB-based analysis.

This combination of physics and biophysics prepared me naturally for Medical Physics because the field requires understanding both physical principles and biological processes. My academic background allows me to approach medical problems from an interdisciplinary perspective, which is essential in modern healthcare.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Duke University?

I prepared by carefully researching programs, understanding their requirements, and organizing all necessary documents and deadlines.

For the Fulbright application, I wrote two essays explaining my academic journey, professional experience, motivation, and future goals. After becoming a finalist, the Fulbright team supported me during the university application process. I also participated in interviews with universities before receiving my admission offers.

How Did You Find Information About Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship and Duke University?

I first learned about the Fulbright Scholarship through a friend who was already a Fulbright Scholar. She encouraged me to apply and guided me throughout the process by sharing recommendations and personal experiences.

After that, I actively researched the scholarship and universities through official websites, podcasts, YouTube channels, and conversations with previous scholars. I wanted to understand not only the requirements but also the values of the scholarship and what qualities they were looking for in candidates.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Fulbright provided vouchers that covered the costs of these exams and gave me approximately one month to prepare and submit my scores. Since the preparation period was very short, time management was extremely important.

I created a structured study schedule, practiced consistently, and focused on using my limited time efficiently. This experience taught me that success is not only about knowledge but also about discipline, organization, and having supportive people around you.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship?

I started by carefully reviewing the scholarship requirements, checking my eligibility, and creating a list of required documents and deadlines.

I asked previous scholars for recommendations and advice, watched interviews and podcasts, and collected as much information as possible about Fulbright and its mission.

I also tried to understand what Fulbright values in candidates. I focused on presenting my personal story honestly, my academic background, professional experience, leadership activities, and my long-term goal of using my education to contribute to my country.

How is Your Experience at Duke University?

My experience with Duke University has been very positive so far.

One of the main reasons I chose Duke was the people. Even during my admission interview, the faculty and staff were extremely friendly, supportive, and welcoming. Of course, Duke’s academic excellence was a major factor, but the feeling that students are truly supported was equally important to me.

Academically, it provides exactly what I was looking for: strong scientific training, opportunities for research, clinical experience, and an environment where students can grow professionally.

What Did You Pursue After the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship?

After completing my Master’s degree at Duke University, I plan to return to Georgia and continue working as a Medical Physicist.

My long-term goal is to help develop Medical Physics in my country. Since Georgia currently does not have an accredited Medical Physics program, I hope to contribute to establishing educational opportunities, supporting future students, and improving clinical practice standards.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it combined my academic background with real-world experience and a clear purpose.

I already had experience working as a Medical Physicist in a clinical environment, which helped me understand the importance and responsibility of this profession. Additionally, my leadership experience through Erasmus+ programs, volunteering, youth education projects, and community activities showed my commitment to being an active citizen.

Most importantly, I had a clear vision of how I want to use my education. My goal is not only personal success but also returning to Georgia and contributing to the development of Medical Physics in my country.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would try to trust the process more and worry less about the final result.

The application journey can be stressful, and it is easy to doubt yourself. Looking back, I would remind myself to focus on the preparation and growth that happen during the process rather than only thinking about the outcome.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My biggest advice is to dream big and have ambitious goals.

Do not underestimate yourself or decide that something is impossible before trying. Choose the university, scholarship, and program that truly match your future goals and your field.

A successful application is not only about grades. It is about your story, your motivation, your experiences, and the impact you want to create.

Be honest, prepare carefully, ask for advice from people who have already gone through the process, and believe that your background and experiences have value. Sometimes the opportunities that seem impossible at first can completely change your life.
