The Journey
I am Lucía Sánchez García, a Spanish health biologist specializing in bioinformatics and computational biology. I'm a PhD student in Molecular Biosciences at the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC), associated with the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM).
My research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that lead from risk factors to the development of cardiovascular diseases, with particular attention to subclinical atherosclerosis, a silent inflammatory state that precedes clinically identifiable cardiovascular events.
As a health biologist, I have always been curious about the human body as a whole, and how disease interferes with it. Over the past few years, I have become increasingly interested in approaching this question from a computational perspective.
Fulbright Fellowship Details
I was awarded the Fulbright Fellowship for the 2025/26 academic year, which provided $26,020.00 to fund a six-month research stay at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
This opportunity has allowed me to continue exploring the pathogenesis of subclinical atherosclerosis in a research group focused on cardiovascular genomics. Being able to carry out this stay at one of the world's leading institutions for genomic and computational biology research has been a valuable opportunity to grow as a researcher and exchange ideas with experts in the field.
Was I Offered Any Other Scholarships?
In 2022, I received the competitive FPI doctoral fellowship, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU), the State Research Agency (AEI), and the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), to carry out my PhD research at CNIC on "Digital Twins for Precision Cardiovascular Medicine" – €111,758.00€.
In 2020, I was granted the competitive PTA (Personal Técnico de Apoyo) fellowship, funded by the MICIU and the AEI, to work as a research support technician at CNIC on "Computational Modeling of Individual Protein Structures and Protein Complexes: Analysis of Omics Data (Bulk and Single-Cell RNA-Seq)" – 42,000.00€.
Educational Background
From 2014–2018, I completed my Bachelor's degree in Health Biology at the University of Alcalá (UAH). This degree gave me broad theoretical training in biological disciplines tied to human health, such as molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, and immunology, combined with hands-on experience in wet lab techniques used in biomedical research and clinical analysis.
From 2019–2021, I completed my Master's degree in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). Through this degree, I gained expertise in mathematics, statistics, and data analysis applied to biology.
Together, these two degrees complemented each other well: the Bachelor's provided the theoretical grounding in biology, whereas the Master's gave me the practical, analytical tools to approach biological questions computationally.
How Did I Prepare to Apply to Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard?
I first learned about this research group affiliated to the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard when its principal investigator visited CNIC to give a talk. During that talk, I realized how closely his research aligned with my own PhD work, and we had a brief conversation afterward. A few months later, when I began exploring options for the Fulbright Fellowship, I reached out to him to discuss a possible collaboration. After an interview, together with my Spanish advisors, we designed the research project I would carry out during the stay.
How Did You Find Information About Fulbright Fellowship and Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM)/Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard?
I found information about the Fulbright Fellowship both through my research center (CNIC) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), to which I'm affiliated. After that, I joined several virtual information sessions hosted by the Fulbright Program to learn more about the fellowship, including the eligibility requirements, application timelines, and funding details.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
How did I prepare for them?
I had already taken the C1 Cambridge exam previously. However, as this test was not accepted as proof of English proficiency for the Fulbright application, I took the Duolingo English Test. I really appreciated its flexibility (I could take it whenever suited me, with your own laptop and without needing to book a specific time or travel to a test center). There are also free practice tests available online, which I would recommend trying beforehand to get familiar with the format.
How Is My Experience at Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT?
My experience at the Broad Institute has been exceptional. The environment is highly collaborative, with numerous opportunities to participate in seminars, hackathons, and social gatherings. There are also dedicated social events and group chats for international members, which have made it easier to connect with other people, navigating a similar experience abroad. The institute is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology and resources, which has significantly enriched my research.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I consider that several factors contributed to making my application stand out. First, my PhD research is closely aligned with the work of the host research group, which made the collaboration feel like a natural fit rather than a stretch. Second, my academic profile combines a strong background in biology with experience in computational and statistical analysis, a multidisciplinary combination that I believe is increasingly needed. I also believe that soft skills, such as communication and adaptability, played a role.
What Did I Pursue After the Fulbright Fellowship?
Following the completion of this fellowship, I will return to my doctoral studies, which are still ongoing. As the research project developed during the stay is not yet complete, I intend to maintain this collaboration and continue exchanging ideas with the group as the work progresses.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I’d have started the application process earlier. There is a substantial amount of documentation required to apply, such as letters of recommendation and a letter of invitation from the host group. Since I didn't plan far enough in advance, I ended up completing everything quicker than I would have liked, just to avoid missing the deadline.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
I'd suggest enjoying the experience. You might think you'll have plenty of time to complete the project, but time flies faster than you expect. I would also recommend staying open to collaborations, meeting new people, and engaging with the Fulbright community, which is large and incredibly supportive.
