Hello! My name is Jose Sandigo, and I am from Nicaragua. I grew up and studied in the South Atlantic region, far from the capital. Today I am pursuing a Master of Engineering Management (MEM) at Purdue University, one of the Top 5 programs of its kind in the United States, as a Fulbright Scholar.

My journey has never followed a single track. Professionally, I have built a career across banking, financial services, technology, and venture capital, leading strategic projects for regional banks and managing global initiatives across multiple markets in Latin America. But my story is not only professional. It is also deeply social. I am part of Global Shapers, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, where I lead the Central America and the Caribbean region, better known as the CAC region: a community of eight countries and hundreds of young leaders working to transform their cities.

That blend is exactly why I chose engineering management. I wanted a degree that lives at the intersection of business, technology, and engineering- the best of both worlds- because the leaders our region needs are the ones who can speak both languages: the language of innovation and the language of impact.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program Scholarship Details

I was awarded the Fulbright Foreign Student Program scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, to pursue my Master of Engineering Management at Purdue University. It is fully funded: tuition, a monthly living stipend, health insurance, and international airfare. But beyond the funding, Fulbright opens the door to a lifelong global network of scholars, leaders, and changemakers. That, to me, is its greatest value.

Educational Background

My academic story began in Nicaragua's South Atlantic region, where opportunities are not handed to you. You earn them. During High school, I won first place nationally as the best student in the country, awarded by Nicaragua's Ministry of Education (MINED). I also earned first place nationally in MINED's Innovation Fair and third place nationally in public speaking. Those early recognitions taught me something I have carried ever since: where you come from does not define how far you can go.

That record earned me a scholarship to study Industrial Engineering at Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), a Jesuit university in Nicaragua, where I graduated with honors and a 97% academic average. My years at UCA opened doors I had only dreamed of. I won the U.S. Department of State's SUSI (Study of the U.S. Institutes) Young Leaders scholarship, joined the EmprendeUCA entrepreneurship program of Fundación Bancaja in Spain, and earned my CELPE-Bras Portuguese certification at the Embassy of Brazil.

Industrial engineering gave me the analytical foundation. Those international programs gave me the global perspective. Together they prepared me for a graduate program that fuses engineering, technology, and business.

My advice here is simple: do not apply everywhere. Apply intentionally. Clarity beats volume every time.

Did I Take Any Standardized Tests? How Did I Prepare?

Yes. I took the TOEFL, the GRE, and the Duolingo English Test (DET). I prepared with Magoosh and a wide range of free online resources. Consistency mattered more than intensity: I studied in focused blocks, tracked my progress, and treated every practice test as the real thing. You do not need expensive prep courses. You need discipline and a plan.

The Fulbright application is not paperwork. It is an exercise in knowing yourself. Before writing a single essay, I spent real time answering one question: What story do only I have to tell? For me, it was the combination of a career across banking, financial services, technology, and venture capital, seven years of social leadership through Global Shapers, and roots in a region of Nicaragua that rarely appears in these stories.

I built my essays around that narrative, connected my professional goals to the impact I want to create back home, prepared thoroughly for the interviews, and made sure every recommendation letter reinforced a different dimension of my profile. Authenticity, not perfection, is what wins.

How Is My Experience at Purdue University?

Purdue has exceeded every expectation. The MEM program surrounds you with talented professionals from all over the world, and the university pushes you to build, not just to study. Since arriving, I founded and lead VCPurdue, a venture capital platform led by students, and I spent my summer as an intern consultant at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, D.C., an experience that connected my engineering management training directly to development impact in Latin America.

Academically, Purdue is world-class. It ranks among the very best engineering schools in the United States, and its MEM program sits in the Top 5 nationally. What makes it special is the balance: rigorous technical depth combined with real business application, taught by faculty who have led in industry. You leave every class with something you can use on Monday morning.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

I would have started earlier and trusted myself sooner. For a long time, programs like Fulbright felt like they belonged to other people: people from capitals, from famous schools, from somewhere else. If I could go back, I would tell my younger self to start researching a year earlier, to reach out to alumni without fear, and to apply the first time I felt almost ready. You will never feel one hundred percent ready, and that is fine.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

The most important thing is clarity: know what you want, then turn it into a real plan. Every year I sit down with a vision board, define exactly what I want to achieve, and attach a date to each goal. That one habit changed my life.

It's a goal if it has a date. It's a dream if it doesn't.

So write your dreams down, give them dates, and work backward. Research intentionally, prepare consistently, tell your authentic story, and surround yourself with people who push you higher. The scholarship is not the destination. It is the vehicle. Where you drive it is up to you.
