How I Secured a Fully Funded Master's at the University of Bath, United Kingdom Through the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship

My name is Javeria Munawar, and I am from Islamabad, Pakistan. I completed my MSc in Molecular Biosciences (Bioinformatics) at the University of Bath. I decided to pursue this degree because I believe that data analysis is an integral part of modern research. With the growing amount of biological data being generated, bioinformatics and data analysis have become essential skills for researchers. I wanted to develop these skills further and gain a strong foundation in bioinformatics, particularly because I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. and contribute to research in the future.

British Council Women in STEM Scholarship Details

I was selected for the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship to pursue my MSc at the University of Bath for the 2023–24 academic year. The scholarship was fully funded and covered the full tuition fee (worth £28,700) for my master’s degree. In addition, it covered my travel expenses to the UK, visa fees, and IELTS examination fee. I also received a monthly living stipend of £1,236, which helped me manage my living expenses while studying in the UK.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

I was also selected for the Bestway Foundation Scholarship at the University of Kent. The scholarship covered the full tuition fee and provided a monthly stipend. However, as the overall financial support was more limited compared to the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship, I decided not to accept the offer and instead accepted the British Council scholarship at the University of Bath.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Biosciences from COMSATS University Islamabad with a CGPA of 3.97. During my undergraduate studies, I did an internship at KRL Hospital, Islamabad, where I gained practical experience in molecular biology and microbiology techniques, including PCR, gel electrophoresis, and genomic DNA extraction.

I then completed my first Master’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology from COMSATS University Islamabad with a CGPA of 3.99. After graduation, I developed an interest in data analysis and completed several online courses in this area, which encouraged me to combine my biological sciences background with computational skills and pursue a second Master’s in Bioinformatics. I also taught science at a government school for one year, which strengthened my scientific knowledge and communication skills.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Bath?

How Did You Find Information About British Council Women in STEM Scholarship and University of Bath?

I first learned about the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship through a colleague who had also applied for it. I then visited the British Council website to explore the participating UK universities and scholarship details. I also watched YouTube videos and experiences shared by previous scholarship alumni, which helped me understand the application process and how the scholarship supported students throughout their studies in the UK.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Before applying for the scholarship, I took the IELTS and achieved an overall band score of 8.0. I prepared for the test for about a month by watching detailed YouTube tutorials covering each section of the exam. I also completed several IELTS mock tests to familiarise myself with the exam format and assess my preparation before taking the actual test.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship?

I started preparing for scholarship applications immediately after completing my first Master’s degree. I gathered and attested my educational documents through the Higher Education Commission and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and prepared for the IELTS, achieving a band score of 8.0.

I also drafted my personal statement and had it reviewed by people in my field and previous scholarship recipients. To strengthen my profile, I completed relevant online courses through Coursera, the World Health Organization, and Udemy, and attended webinars related to my areas of interest.

How is Your Experience at the University of Bath?

My experience at the University of Bath has been amazing. The university offers world-class learning opportunities and facilities, along with excellent mental health and wellbeing support through activities such as gardening and cooking. The teachers, mentors, and staff are also very supportive and approachable, which has made my overall experience highly rewarding.

How Do You Rate the University of Bath Academically?

I would rate the University of Bath 9.5/10 academically. The quality of education, mentorship, research opportunities, and student support is outstanding. The university provides excellent training and practical learning opportunities that prepare students well for their future careers. Its strong academic and research environment was one of the key reasons I had such a positive experience.

How Does the University of Bath Support International Students?

The University of Bath provides excellent support to international students through various societies representing different countries and cultures. It also organises events during occasions such as Ramadan to help students feel welcomed and included. In addition, the university offers activities such as painting, gardening, and guided tours, particularly during holiday periods, which help international students feel connected and reduce homesickness. English language classes are also available to support students who may face language barriers.

What Did You Pursue After the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship?

After completing my Master’s degree, I started a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath. During my MSc, I applied for various industry roles, including bioinformatics and clinical microbiology positions, while also contacting professors and applying for PhD opportunities.

Fortunately, I was selected for a multidisciplinary PhD project combining microbiology, bioinformatics, and electrochemistry. The project was a perfect fit for my academic background and the skills I developed during my MSc, which made it an exciting next step in my research journey.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because I clearly highlighted my relevant academic background, skills, and experience in relation to the Master’s degree I was applying for. I also explained how the scholarship would help me achieve my career and research goals and, importantly, how I could use the knowledge and skills gained to contribute to my community.

I believe it is important to stay true to yourself, clearly communicate your aspirations, and be open about your goals and dreams. A genuine and well-focused application can make a strong impression.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would gain more practical experience through internships related to my field. I would also start preparing my scholarship documents during my first Master’s degree rather than waiting until graduation. Most importantly, I would apply for more scholarships instead of letting a lack of confidence or preparation hold me back.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is to start preparing for scholarships early, ideally during your undergraduate or Master’s degree. Seek guidance from peers, mentors, teachers, and previous scholarship recipients, and ask questions about the application process.

I would also encourage students to build a well-rounded profile by gaining practical experience and participating in activities such as hackathons, conferences, volunteering, and other academic or extracurricular events. These experiences demonstrate initiative and genuine interest in your field.

Most importantly, remember that the scholarship journey can involve many applications, failures, and rejections. Do not take rejection personally. Keep learning, improving, and applying. One successful opportunity can make all the previous setbacks worthwhile.
