The Journey

My name is Ana, and I am from Uruguay. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and worked for about five years as a hydraulic and environmental engineer before pursuing graduate studies in the United States. During my professional experience, I became increasingly interested in the intersection of infrastructure, sustainability, and public policy, particularly how cities can become more resilient and environmentally sustainable.

This motivated me to pursue a Master of Science in Environmental Sustainability at Indiana University Bloomington, specializing in Municipal Sustainability. I wanted to complement my engineering background with policy, planning, and sustainability knowledge so I could contribute to developing more sustainable and resilient communities in Uruguay and beyond.

Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship Details

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

N/A. I only applied for the Fulbright Scholarship.

Educational Background

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in Uruguay and worked for approximately five years as a hydraulic and environmental engineer before applying for graduate school. My academic training gave me strong analytical and problem-solving skills, while my professional experience exposed me to real-world challenges related to water resources, infrastructure, and sustainable development.

These experiences motivated me to deepen my understanding of environmental sustainability and public policy, making a master's degree the natural next step in my career.

How Did You Find Information About Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship and Indiana University Bloomington?

I first learned about the Fulbright Scholarship through an email sent by my undergraduate university. After that, I spent a significant amount of time researching the Fulbright program, graduate programs that matched my interests, and universities that aligned with my career goals. I carefully compared curricula, faculty expertise, and opportunities for research and professional development before selecting the universities I applied to.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I took both the TOEFL and the GRE. For the TOEFL, I worked with an English teacher in Uruguay who helped me strengthen both my academic writing and speaking skills. For the GRE, I prepared independently using Magoosh, following a structured study plan and practicing consistently over several months. Having a disciplined study schedule was key to feeling confident on test day.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship?

One of the most valuable parts of my preparation was reaching out to former Fulbright fellows from Uruguay. They generously shared their experiences and advice about both the application and interview process, which helped me understand what the selection committee was looking for.

I also invested time in improving my English by taking conversation classes, thoroughly researching the Fulbright program, and learning about the universities and degree programs I was applying to. Beyond preparing the required documents, I spent considerable time reflecting on my personal and professional goals so I could clearly explain why graduate study in the United States would help me contribute to my home country after graduation.

My biggest piece of advice is to start early. A strong application takes time, and the more you can refine your essays, seek feedback, and prepare for interviews, the stronger your application will be.

How is Your Experience at Indiana University Bloomington?

My experience at Indiana University Bloomington was exceptional. Beyond receiving a high-quality education, I had the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that connected academic learning with real-world impact. During my studies, I worked with the university's Transportation Demand Management office, conducted research on bicycle theft prevention using GIS, and collaborated on sustainability initiatives that strengthened my technical and professional skills.

The university also provided an environment where I could interact with people from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, which broadened my perspective and enriched my graduate experience.

What Did You Pursue After the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship?

After completing my master's degree, I returned to Uruguay, as encouraged by the Fulbright Program, and began working in the public sector. Today, I work as a technical advisor supporting local governments on projects related to public investment and sustainable development.

My graduate education has allowed me to apply international knowledge and best practices to help strengthen public institutions and contribute to sustainable development in my home country.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it combined a strong academic background with several years of relevant professional experience and a clear sense of purpose. Rather than pursuing graduate school simply to continue my education, I had a well-defined vision of how I wanted to use the knowledge and skills I would gain to contribute to sustainable development in Uruguay.
