Fortunately, there are excellent dental schools worldwide where eligible students can study without tuition fees or with tuition-free options, depending on citizenship, residency status, degree level, and language of instruction. This article introduces five of the free dental schools that don’t charge tuition.
Dental Schools That Do Not Charge Tuition to International Students
1. School of Dentistry – University of São Paulo
The first dental school on this list is the School of Dentistry at the University of São Paulo, also known as USP, in Brazil. USP is one of Brazil’s most prestigious public universities, and its undergraduate programs are free of charge.
This means international students are not charged tuition simply because they are from another country. However, applicants must still meet the university’s admission requirements and should expect the program to be taught mainly in Portuguese. USP offers dentistry education through its dental schools, including campuses such as São Paulo, Bauru, and Ribeirão Preto.
For students who are willing to study in Portuguese and compete for admission, USP is one of the strongest tuition-free options for dentistry outside Europe.
2. Piracicaba Dental School – University of Campinas
Another excellent tuition-free option in Brazil is the Piracicaba Dental School at the University of Campinas, commonly known as UNICAMP. The university states that its undergraduate courses are free, meaning students do not pay tuition or monthly fees to study.
UNICAMP specifically lists dentistry among its undergraduate areas available to foreign students. Like other Brazilian public universities, admission is competitive, and international applicants should carefully check the correct admission pathway before applying.
The main limitation for many international students is the language of instruction. Dentistry at UNICAMP is generally taught in Portuguese, so applicants will usually need strong Portuguese skills to succeed in the program.
3. School of Dentistry – Federal University of Minas Gerais
The Federal University of Minas Gerais, also known as UFMG, is another strong Brazilian option for tuition-free dental education. UFMG describes itself as a tuition-free public educational institution, which makes it attractive for students looking for affordable study options.
UFMG’s dentistry program is offered at the undergraduate level and is taught in Portuguese. Since it is a public university, international students should confirm the correct admission route, such as regular admission or other approved pathways for foreign applicants.
For students who can meet the academic and language requirements, UFMG can be a strong non-European option for studying dentistry without paying tuition.
4. Faculty of Odontology – University of Iceland
The Faculty of Odontology at the University of Iceland is another option to consider. The University of Iceland currently states that students do not pay tuition fees, although all active students must pay an annual registration fee. Applicants from outside the EEA/EFTA also pay a handling and processing fee.
The odontology pathway includes a BS degree followed by the Cand. Odont. qualification. The university states that 180 ECTS credits are required for the BS degree and another 180 ECTS credits are required for the Cand. Odont. qualification.
Applicants should be careful with this option because the program is highly language-dependent. The entrance test is held in Icelandic, and courses in the program are generally taught in Icelandic. The university also notes that, depending on future government decisions, applicants from outside the EEA/EFTA and Switzerland who begin studies in 2026 or later may be required to pay tuition fees.
5. First Faculty of Medicine – Charles University
The final dental school on this list is the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in the Czech Republic. Charles University states that studies in Czech-taught programs are free of charge. This applies regardless of nationality, making it possible for international students to study tuition-free if they are admitted to a Czech-language program.
The important distinction is language. Czech-taught programs can be tuition-free, but foreign-language programs, including English-taught medical and dental programs, usually charge tuition. Therefore, this is a tuition-free option only for students who are prepared to study dentistry in Czech.
For international students with strong Czech-language ability, Charles University is one of the best European options for tuition-free dentistry.
