University education reaches high standards in the country, and students can enjoy a diverse cultural and social life.

Cost of Studying Master’s in Public Health in Austria

Before making a decision, it is advisable to check each course’s current fees and daily costs. Costs vary widely by provider and by whether the program is offered by a public university, a university of applied sciences, a private university, or a continuing education institution. For example, MedUni Vienna lists its Public Health MSc (Continuing Education) at €13,400, Paracelsus Medical University lists its online MScPH at €12,150, FH JOANNEUM and Carinthia University of Applied Sciences list tuition at €363.36 per semester, UMIT TIROL lists €890 per semester, FH Burgenland lists no tuition fees, and the University for Continuing Education Krems lists its Healthcare Management MSc (CE) at €15,900. The last available Medical University of Graz MPH folder lists €12,900, but applicants should confirm the next intake and fee with the Postgraduate School.

For living expenses, Austria’s official Study in Austria portal currently estimates average monthly student living costs at about €1,400. Costs vary by location and lifestyle, with Vienna and other larger cities usually more expensive than smaller towns.

Requirements to Study MPH

Admission requirements vary by institution and program. For FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences, a relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification is required. Eligible backgrounds include tourism, leisure, health sciences, sport, exercise, events/training, and economic, health, or social sciences. Because the program is taught in German, German proficiency is required.

At UMIT TIROL, applicants need a general university entrance qualification and a completed university degree of at least bachelor’s level, worth at least 180 ECTS, from a recognized institution with a relation to healthcare or medicine. Applicants without sufficient health or life-science background may have to take a supplementary examination.

In ambiguous cases, programs may review applications individually or ask students to complete additional requirements during the degree. Always check the relevant admissions page before applying, especially if your previous degree was earned outside Austria.

In What Languages Do You Study MPH in Austria?

Most programs in this article are taught mainly in German. This applies to MedUni Vienna, FH JOANNEUM, Carinthia University of Applied Sciences’ Health Management master’s program, and the University for Continuing Education Krems Healthcare Management MSc (CE). UMIT TIROL’s English MPH page currently points readers to the German page, so applicants should confirm the exact teaching language and any English-language components with UMIT. Paracelsus Medical University confirms that its Public Health MScPH is online, but applicants should check PMU’s admissions office for current language requirements. FH Burgenland states German C1 and English at least B2 language requirements for its Health Management and Integrated Healthcare program.

1. Medical University Graz

2. Johanneum University of Applied Sciences

FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences has campuses in Graz, Bad Gleichenberg, and Kapfenberg. Besides health programs, the institution offers courses in areas such as design, business, technology, media, and architecture. Its courses are designed to meet the expectations and challenges of today’s society and the job market.

At this university, Health Management and Public Health is a study track within the Health, Tourism and Sport Management master’s program. The program is part-time, lasts four semesters, carries 120 ECTS credits, and leads to a Master of Arts in Business (MA). It prepares students for roles involving health promotion, public health, rehabilitation, health resorts, and management in healthcare-related institutions.

3. University of Health Sciences, Informatics, and Technology, Tirol

UMIT TIROL offers a Public Health MPH program with an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented focus. The current program information describes a work-compatible structure with three-day attendance blocks, selected online courses, an internship, and a winter semester start.

About 35 students can take part in the Public Health program in Tirol annually. The program carries 120 ECTS credits and focuses on public health research methods, competencies, practice, and regional, national, and international health issues.

4. Paracelsus Medical University

Paracelsus Medical University is a private medical university with locations in Salzburg and Nuremberg. Its Public Health program is an online Master of Science in Public Health (MScPH) designed for students who want flexibility while studying alongside work or other commitments.

The MScPH is a four-semester, 120 ECTS program. The curriculum offers an interprofessional, research-oriented, and global public health profile and examines factors that influence health, interdisciplinary perspectives, assessment tools, critical thinking, and possible ways to improve health systems and health outcomes.

5. Kärnten University of Applied Sciences

The Health Management master’s program investigates current and future challenges in healthcare leadership and management. It trains students in areas such as business administration in healthcare, leadership, demographic management, digital transformation, entrepreneurship, and healthcare system development. The program lasts four semesters, carries 120 ECTS credits, and leads to a Master of Arts in Business.

6. University for Continuing Education Krems

University for Continuing Education Krems focuses on continuing education and offers programs for professionals who want to develop advanced expertise while continuing their careers.

The current Healthcare Management MSc (CE) is a blended-learning continuing education master’s program. It lasts three semesters, carries 60 ECTS credits, and focuses on management competencies for healthcare organizations. The university also lists a related Certificate Program, Evidence-Based Public Health und Gesundheitsmanagement, but that is not a full master’s degree.
