Thailand is a Southeast Asian country known for its beaches and islands, grand temples, cuisine, and the martial art Muay Thai. Formerly known as Siam, Thailand avoided European colonization, a history often connected with the meaning of its name as the “Land of the Free.” The country is also widely known as the “Land of Smiles,” a nickname associated with Thai hospitality.

A welcoming community is just one of the many reasons international students are drawn to the country. Thailand has much more to offer when it comes to higher education. In this article, we will be looking at the best universities in Thailand for international students.

FAQs: Studying in Thailand

Is Thailand Good for International Students to Study In?

Thailand places strong emphasis on education, and many Thai universities offer international programs taught in English or partly in English. International students can find programs in health sciences, engineering, science and technology, environmental studies, agriculture, business, humanities, and social sciences.

Tuition fees vary by university, level, and program, and students should always check the latest official fee page for each institution. As one benchmark, Chulalongkorn University lists international undergraduate tuition from 70,000 to 141,500 Thai baht per term for most groups, with its international medical program listed separately at 570,000 Thai baht; postgraduate tuition ranges from 20,000 to 207,000 Thai baht per term, depending on the program.

Living costs also depend on city and lifestyle. Chulalongkorn University’s guidance estimates food and personal expenses at at least 10,000 Thai baht per month, with dormitory costs around 15,000 Thai baht per month, excluding books and other personal expenses.

Can International Students Work in Thailand While Studying?

International students who study in Thailand generally need a Student Visa, usually a Non-Immigrant “ED” or, for eligible higher education students, “ED Plus” visa. An ED visa is issued for education purposes, and foreign nationals may work in Thailand only after receiving the proper work authorization, including a work permit. Students should confirm their visa conditions with their university and the nearest Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate before taking any paid work.

Can International Students Stay in Thailand After Graduation?

Rules depend on the student’s visa type and status. Standard ED visa holders must keep a valid stay permit and either extend, change visa category, or leave Thailand when their permission to stay ends. Eligible Non-ED Plus students at bachelor’s degree level or higher may extend their stay in Thailand for one year after graduation to seek employment, travel, or take part in other activities, and may change visa type in Thailand if employed. Graduates who wish to work in Thailand generally need the appropriate Non-Immigrant “B” status and a work permit before starting work.

Thailand’s blend of modern and ancient culture creates interesting experiences for international students. The cost of living is relatively inexpensive compared with many popular study destinations, but costs vary by city, program, and lifestyle.
