1. University of Tulsa

The McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Tulsa is recognized as one of the top petroleum engineering schools in the United States. UTulsa offers a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering, a petroleum engineering minor, master’s programs, and a Ph.D., and its petroleum engineering program reports strong national rankings.

The bachelor’s curriculum begins with foundations in mathematics, science, and engineering before moving into more advanced petroleum engineering topics. Students from other areas of study may also learn more about petroleum engineering through the school’s minor degree program.

2. University of Texas at Austin

With a department formed in 1930 and first degrees awarded in 1931, the University of Texas at Austin has one of the longest-running and most highly ranked programs in the field. The Hildebrand Department reports a No. 1 global petroleum engineering ranking by QS and a No. 1 U.S. graduate petroleum engineering ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

Students have access to internships, hackathons, student organizations, summer research, industry connections, high-tech labs, and state-of-the-art facilities. 3. University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen offers on-campus BEng and MEng Petroleum Engineering programs. Its degree search lists the BEng as 48 months and the MEng as 60 months, and the program page states that students can apply for the four-year BEng or five-year MEng.

The first two years cover general engineering, including chemical, mechanical, petroleum, electrical and electronic, and civil engineering. Students specialize later, and Aberdeen states that movement between the BEng and MEng is possible until the second half of the fourth year when requirements are met. The degrees are accredited by the Energy Institute and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the curriculum also connects petroleum engineering skills with energy-transition areas such as geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage.

4. Technical University of Denmark

The Technical University of Denmark is a leading technical university, but its current program specifications list Petroleum Engineering as a discontinued MSc program. For this reason, prospective students should verify DTU’s current engineering and energy-related options before applying for a petroleum engineering pathway.

The original petroleum engineering master’s information is no longer current. Students interested in DTU may instead review current programs such as General Engineering at the undergraduate level and DTU’s listed master’s programs in engineering, energy, earth, and space-related areas.

5. Texas A&M University

Texas A&M is an excellent university for petroleum engineering. Its Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering reports a No. 1 undergraduate program ranking and currently lists 477 undergraduate students and 119 graduate students.

The University of Oklahoma is another strong petroleum engineering school. Its Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering offers a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and graduate programs, and the current catalog lists M.S. and Ph.D. pathways in petroleum engineering. The B.S. in Petroleum Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET and requires 126 total credit hours.
