1. Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

Situated in Kaunas, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) was created in 2010 when Kaunas University of Medicine and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy merged. It is the largest university in the field of biomedical studies in Lithuania. Students benefit from the university’s clinical links with the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos and LSMU Kaunas Hospital, where medical education, clinical practice, and practical training are closely connected.

Medical studies in Kaunas began at the end of 1919. Today, LSMU’s English-taught Medicine program lasts six years, carries 360 ECTS credits, and awards an MSc in Health Sciences and the professional qualification of Medical Doctor. The curriculum uses problem-based learning and includes medicine studies, clinical practice, and research fundamentals.

2. Vilnius University

Vilnius University, in Lithuania’s capital, is the oldest university in the Baltic states and one of the oldest universities in Central and Eastern Europe. It traces its origins to 1579, when King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Stephen Báthory issued a privilege to open the Vilnius Academy, and Pope Gregory XIII approved the reorganization of Vilnius College into a university. After Lithuania regained independence, the university regained its autonomy and the name Vilnius University in 1990.

The Faculty of Medicine offers a six-year integrated Medicine program taught in English and Lithuanian. The current tuition is €14,100 per year. The program comprises 360 credits; according to Lithuania’s AIKOS register, 31% of the program covers the fundamentals of biomedical sciences, 58% covers clinical courses and practical training, and core courses account for 11%. Vilnius University states that graduates can proceed to residency and that the degree facilitates mobility in the EU, but students should confirm licensing rules in their intended country of practice.
