Cyprus offers a unique setting to study medicine on an island in the Mediterranean. The main medical degrees covered here are taught in English, and students can benefit from the country’s Mediterranean climate and coastal, urban, and mountain settings.
As Cyprus is a small country, its medical school options are limited. The main current options covered below are the University of Nicosia Medical School and the European University Cyprus School of Medicine.
How much does medical school cost in Cyprus?
While the cost of medical school is lower in Cyprus than in many other English-speaking destinations, it can still be relatively expensive. For example, at the University of Nicosia Medical School, annual tuition for the six-year MD is €24,000 per year. Students assigned to international partner institutions pay an additional clinical training supplement during the last two years, depending on the location: €6,000 per year for UK or USA placements and €3,000 per year for Switzerland or Germany placements. The Graduate Entry MD at the University of Nicosia is listed at €25,000 per year, with clinical training supplements in years four and five depending on the clinical site allocation.
In terms of living costs, the University of Nicosia advises students staying in Nicosia for the full year to budget a minimum of €12,000 per year, although actual costs will depend on lifestyle.
How long will it take to study medicine in Cyprus?
For students entering directly from high school, medical school in Cyprus generally takes six years and leads to an MD degree. The University of Nicosia also offers a five-year Graduate Entry MD for applicants who already hold a university degree.
Top Medical Schools in Cyprus
1. University of Nicosia Medical School
Located in the country’s capital city, the University of Nicosia Medical School is the oldest and largest medical school in Cyprus. The University of Nicosia is currently ranked among the top 501–600 universities globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, and its Medical and Health subject ranking is also listed in the 501–600 band. The Medical School offers a six-year Undergraduate Entry MD, a five-year Graduate Entry MD, a Master of Public Health, an MSc in Family Medicine, and a PhD in Medical Sciences.
The University of Nicosia MD is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and is accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education. The university also states that the MD degree is listed in the relevant annex of the EU directive on mutual recognition of professional qualifications for EU/EEA nationals plus Switzerland. Graduates should still check the specific licensing and registration rules of the country where they plan to practice medicine.
The University of Nicosia Medical School has an international student body, with more than 1,000 students from 90 countries. It started the first medical program in Cyprus in 2011 by offering the St George’s, University of London graduate-entry MBBS program. Students can also continue to a PhD in Medical Sciences at the university.
2. European University Cyprus School of Medicine
Another medical school option in Cyprus is European University Cyprus, which offers an on-campus, English-taught six-year MD with 360 ECTS. The School of Medicine describes its approach as blending rigorous scientific theory with patient-centered clinical practice. EUC also states that its Medical Education Program is accredited through World Federation for Medical Education standards and that its students and graduates can apply to ECFMG to take the US Medical Licensing Examination for medical licensure in the United States, subject to ECFMG requirements.
Practical training at EUC includes clinical rotations in public and private hospitals in Cyprus, as well as listed clinical sites in Greece, the USA, and Germany. The school also lists an international network for summer externships, including Shriners Hospitals for Children in the USA, Imperial College London in the UK, Barts and The London School of Medicine, the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
EUC has also announced that it served as an official host for the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Executive and Continuing Professional Education course “Principles and Practice of Clinical Research,” which is delivered online by Harvard. Because EUC’s official announcement is older, prospective students should confirm the latest availability directly with EUC or Harvard.
