According to the QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings, it has the second-strongest higher education system in the entire world, behind only the United States of America. This article takes you through the best British universities that offer a Master’s degree in Public Health.

Universities in the UK with a Master’s Degree in Public Health

1. Imperial College London

With around 17,000 students enrolled, the Imperial College London claims a spot in the top 10 lists of both QS World University Rankings 2020 and Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020. It was founded in 1907 by royal charter, merging three different institutions: Royal College of Science, Royal School of Mines, and City & Guilds College. It has a bunch of campuses across London and the southeast of England, with South Kensington, White City, Silwood Park, and St Mary’s being the prominent ones.

Imperial’s Master of Public Health is a 90-credit program administered by the Faculty of Medicine.

There are two streams to choose from: Health Services and Systems, and Global Health. The Health Services and Systems stream revolves around the theory and practice of health promotion as well as health service management. The Global Health stream, on the other hand, deals with the manifestations of health challenges within the context of various country settings. The full-time MPH program runs for a year at the St Mary’s campus.

A fully-online version of the program, known as Global Master of Public Health, is also available in part-time study mode, running for two years.

 

2. University of Edinburgh

Next on our list of universities in the UK with a Master’s in Public Health is the University of Edinburgh. Opening its gates way back in 1583, the University of Edinburgh currently offers higher education to over 43,000 students. Of them, around 20,000 are international students. The university ranks 20th in the QS World University Rankings 2020. It has five main campuses across the capital of Scotland.

At Edinburgh, the Master of Public Health program is run by the Edinburgh Medical School’s Molecular, Genetic, and Population Health Sciences. Students can complete it in one year in a full-time format and in two years in a part-time format. The first semester (September – December) consists of core courses, while the second one (January – April) deals with elective courses. Then, students work on a dissertation project over the next four months (May-August). It is also possible to complete the MPH program online in three years in a part-time format.

 

3. King’s College London

Founded in 1829, King’s College London currently has a student population north of 30,000. It has five campuses across the English capital: the Strand campus, Guy’s campus, the Waterloo campus, the St Thomas’s campus, and the Denmark Hill campus. According to several global university rankings, it is one of the top 40 universities in the world.

King’s offers the Master of Public Health program in both full-time and part-time study modes at Guy’s campus. The School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences is in charge of the program.

Full-time students can complete it in one year, while part-time students can do so in two years. The MPH program allows students to pursue any one of three specialist pathways: Primary Care, Environmental Health, and Allied Health. It is also available in a fully-online delivery mode.

 

4. University of Warwick

Lying on the outskirts of the city of Coventry, the University of Warwick is home to over 27,000 students. Multiple global university rankings recognize it as one of the world’s top 100 universities. The public research university began its journey in 1960.

Warwick’s Master in Public Health program is very famous in the UK. It claims the 16th spot in the world in the Health Economics / Public Health category of Eduniversal Best Master’s Ranking 2019.

It can be completed in a year in full-time format, or within three years in part-time format. Students undertake four core modules, before choosing any three out of 11 optional modules. Eventually, they take on either a Professional Project or a Dissertation.

 

5. University of Bristol

The University of Bristol has been operating as an independent university for 110 years now. Its total enrollment stands at over 24,000. The Bristol-based university ranks 51st globally in the QS World University Rankings 2020.

At Bristol, the Master’s degree in Public Health is being offered as known as Master of Science – Public Health. It takes place at the Clifton campus and is available in both full-time and part-time study modes. The duration is one year for full-time students and two or three years for part-time students. The program is made up of nine taught units and a research dissertation. The Bristol Medical School is in charge of it.

 

6. University of Glasgow

Sixth on our list of universities in the UK with the Master’s in Public Health is the University of Glasgow. It began its journey in 1451 as the fourth university in the English-speaking world. At present, it has a student population of around 29,000, including international students hailing from more than 140 countries.

The university has two campuses located in Glasgow – the Gilmorehill campus and the Garscube campus – and a remote campus sited at Dumfries in southwest Scotland. According to the QS World University Rankings 2020, it ranks 67th in the world.

Glasgow has been offering its Master of Public Health since 1981. It includes three core courses, three optional courses picked by students themselves, and a research project of 15,000 – 20,000 words.

It is possible to earn an MPH degree with a specialism in Health Promotion, Data Science, Health Economics, or Epidemiology. The program runs for a year in a full-time format and for two to four years in a part-time format.

 

7. University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham is another British university that claims a spot in the top 100 list of QS World University Rankings 2020. It was founded as a University College in 1881 and went on to become a full-fledged university in 1948. The Nottingham-based university has over 34,000 students enrolled.

At Nottingham, the Master of Public Health program is administered by the School of Medicine’s Division of Epidemiology and Public Health. Classes take place at Nottingham City Hospital’s Clinical Sciences Building. The 180-credit program consists of three major components: core modules (50 credits), optional modules (70 credits), and dissertation (60 credits). Full-time students can complete it in one year, while it takes two years for part-time students to do so.
