Humboldt State University (HSU) is located in Arcata, California. This public university was founded in 1913. It acquired its current status as a state college in 1921, but it didn’t start offering bachelor’s degrees until 1924. Its current name was established in 1974. HSU is a small institution with approximately 8,000 students and 51 majors available. It’s especially known for its focus on natural studies, with a great location that further promotes research in this area. HSU is located in the northern part of California, near Humboldt Bay. Furthermore, a redwood forest is right next to the campus, enhancing the closeness with nature. Due to the medium size of the student population, students and professors get to know each other really well. Personalized attention and communication between the faculty and the students are highly valued at HSU.

The three colleges that conform to the university are the College of Natural Resources and Sciences; the College of Professional Studies; and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The majority of professors are deeply interested in research. Furthermore, there are numerous opportunities for students to get involved in these projects. Research centers are mostly focused on natural resources studies, with experts in the field leading the investigations. HSU has its ocean vessel in which undergraduate students that are researchers can explore marine biology.

HSU ranks in the top 100 Best Colleges of The Regional West. In addition, it’s also among the top 100 Most Liberal Colleges in America. There are 12 athletic teams that identify as the Lumberjacks or Humboldt State Jacks. Softball is the sport in which HSU has had more historical success. Aside from the 12 disciplines that include basketball, soccer, and rowing, there are other extracurricular activities. With over 100 clubs available to students, there’s a great and diverse number of options. From archery to logging sports, these options allow for interaction with the beautiful nature that surrounds the university. Something that also characterizes HSU is the deep involvement of the students in starting new projects. One of these is the school’s first newspaper, The Foghorn. Furthermore, HSU is strongly committed to diversity. One sign of this is the newspaper called El Leñador –meaning The Lumberjack- which is published in both Spanish and English. This newspaper has won awards when competing against other universities in California. HSU’s magazine, titled Osprey is also an award-winning publication at the regional level.

Acceptance Rate At Humboldt State University

The acceptance rate at HSU is one of the highest in the country, estimated at approximately 82%. This means that the likelihood of a high school graduate being accepted is very high. They require both GPA and ACT scores for application. The average GPA for acceptance to HSU is 3.2 with an ACT range of 18 to 24.  47% of the students that enter this institution go on to successfully graduate, which is above the current average in the United States. HSU is considered one of the best value universities in the state of California.
